"RIVER EM - with a fly rod along the worlds best sea trout water"
During 1999/2000, I worked intensely on a book about the river Em, with the above title. The
book, which has 15 chapters, is mainly about the game fishing in the river, which is considered
as one of the best in the world, mainly because of the unique version of sea trout, which are
the biggest and heaviest in the world. In view of this fact, it is surprising that a comprehensive
book about the river has not been written before.
Along the river Em there is a longstanding tradition of game fishing, especially on Em’s fishing
banks, where there, among other interesting things, are fascinating catch/fishing journals of the
sea trout going back to the 1920ies. This material is presented in the book along with my own
statistics, compiled over 25 years of fishing along the river.
There are another 2 organised sea trout fishing beats, Emsfors and Fliseryd, which are in the
book as well as a more detailed description of the river Em’ flow from its source to the sea. Also
sea trout’s biology, migration pattern and behaviour, its impact on culture and the history of the
game fishing, mixed with my own and other fishermen’s experiences.
A detailed description of the older flies especially created for the river EM, alongside some
modern versions., and some of the well known anglers like Gustaf and Göran Ulfsparre, Stig
Nilsson, "Olle-Spik”, who used them are mentioned in the book.
The book also includes extracts and photos from the material that Gustaf Ulfsparre started to
collect, but sadly never finished during his lifetime… This makes for very exciting reading!
There are also maps of the river Em’s different beats and descriptions of the pools with detailed
fishing advice for each pool, also fishing and casting techniques and much more. Regarding the
photo material for the book, I have had the good fortune to use freely all the pictures, which
during the years have been collected at Em’s Estate, which means that there are some black and
white photos from the beginning of the 1900 hundreds together with my own. Altogether, that
makes around hundred photos.
The book, which is in hardback, is about 208 pages, colour and printed on high quality paper,
and produced by established professionals. The foreword is written by Göran Ulfsparre at Em,
the introduction and watercolour are by artist and “old Em fisherman”", Rolf Smedman. The artist
Thommy Gustavsson, from Örebro, created the book’s illustrations. The price for the book is 350
Swedish kronor; the bibliophile edition of 120 copies is sold out.
